Veteran AEW Star Already Has Retirement Storyline In Mind
A veteran AEW wrestler already knows how he wants to retire when it’s the right time to do it.
When a pro wrestler retires as a wrestler, sometimes they do it quietly, and other times there’s an angle involved to make the retirement official.
Examples of famous wrestler retirements in WWE were Ric Flair in 2008 (he did wrestle again in TNA and other places, but not WWE), Shawn Michaels in 2010 (he did wrestle one more match later), and John Cena on his 2025 retirement tour this year, which will end in December.
Sting had an incredible retirement match at the AEW Revolution PPV in 2024, where he won a tag team match with Darby Allin over The Young Bucks to wind up Sting’s career in AEW with an undefeated record.
At 51 years of age, Montel Vontavious Porter (MVP) is close to the end of his career since he is just a part-timer at this point, but he is still competing at a high level, including at a tag team match at All Out.
AEW’s MVP Has A Retirement Storyline Idea
While speaking to Yahoo’s Uncrowned, MVP explained the story idea he wants to do when he decides to retire, and he’s even discussed it with his AEW boss, Tony Khan.
“I’ve talked to Tony Khan about this, and he’s a great guy to work for, and I enjoy the relationship that I’ve developed with him. I told him that I’m not retired yet, but at some point I would like to have a feud with someone that I can have the good old-fashioned ‘if I lose, I’ll retire’ angle, so I can go out on my back and give some young, deserving and willing talent the opportunity to say, ‘I retired MVP.’
“Right now, there are so many talented guys that I respect that I think are awesome, but I don’t have anybody [picked out], because, like I said, I’m not ready to retire yet.”
If MVP does the “if I lose, I retire” story, then it would be similar to Ric Flair’s retirement angle in WWE in 2008, which MVP was a part of because Flair beat MVP in a match prior to Flair’s retirement match.
MVP will be in action with The Hurt Syndicate’s Bobby Lashley & Shelton Benjamin against Ricochet, Bishop Kaun & Toa Liona at AEW All Out on Saturday, September 20th in Toronto.
