Update On AEW’s Plans For Paul Wight’s Captain Insano
Could Paul Wight be bringing Captain Insano to Wembley Stadium?
In March of 2022, Paul Wight confirmed that AEW had the rights to use the character Captain Insano, the hero of Adam Sandler’s protagonist character in 1998’s The Waterboy. Now, as All Elite Wrestling prepares to make its UK debut in front of a record-breaking crowd at AEW All In, he teased the possibility of bringing the iconic character to Wembley Stadium.
Speaking in a recent interview with DAZN Wrestling, the former Big Show confirmed that he will be in London for All In, but also dropped a huge hint that his alter ego might appear as well. He didn’t clarify whether or not he’d be stepping into the ring for active competition.
“I would have to say if I was a betting person because I’m not allowed to stooge, I’d say the odds are pretty good that I’ll be here at Wembley… If I’m a gambling man, which I’m not, I would bet very strongly that there’s a high, high probability that Captain Insano will probably make it to Wembley.” (h/t 411Mania)
Now, a new report from Fightful Select sheds more light on the situation, revealing that All Elite Wrestling secured the rights to the character in March of 2021. Wight finally debuted the character in November of 2022 when he appeared in a music video alongside The Acclaimed, and according to Fightful, Insano could be on his way back to the company as AEW reportedly had gear made for the character to use.
Fightful didn’t have details on if or how the gear was to be used, but this information along with Wight’s tease leads fans to wonder if Captain Insano could be making his surprise in-ring debut at All In.
When Did Paul Wight Last Wrestle In AEW?
Since joining All Elite Wrestling in 2021, Paul Wight has wrestled on four occasions, making his in-ring debut for the company at AEW All Out 2021 and defeating QT Marshall. His most recent bout came on the April 4th, 2022 episode of Dark: Elevation where he defeated Anthony Greene.
