Unlikely Former Superstar Claims They Almost Won The WWE Championship Instead Of Bret Hart
WWE Hall of Famer Tito Santana revealed that he was allegedly considered for the WWE Championship in 1992, a title that eventually went to Bret “The Hitman” Hart.
During a live Q&A session, Santana shared a surprising story about a conversation he had with fellow wrestling legend Ted DiBiase, who claimed to have inside information from Pat Patterson, a key figure in WWE’s creative team at the time. According to Santana, DiBiase told him:
Yeah Tito, Pat Patterson came up to me and he told me it was between you and Bret for who was gonna get the belt.
However, Santana expressed doubt about whether this information was entirely truthful, suggesting that the decision to crown Bret Hart as champion may have been made well in advance. He explained:
We weren’t the only ones that they bullsh**ted, they knew it was Bret, and it was gonna be Bret all along. They decided to go into Canada, which, you know, ended up being a good move, for Bret and for Canadian wrestling.
Ultimately, Bret Hart’s victory over Ric Flair for the WWE Championship in 1992 marked a historic moment for both Hart and the WWE. Hart went on to have a memorable title reign, cementing his legacy as one of wrestling’s greatest champions.
Although Santana never captured the WWE Championship, he enjoyed a decorated career. He became a two-time Intercontinental Champion and found success in the tag team division as part of Strike Force alongside Rick Martel, solidifying his place as a respected figure in wrestling history.
What Did Bret Hart Say About His Feud With Owen Hart For The WWE Championship?
Bret Hart spoke about his feud with Owen Hart over the WWE Championship and explained how the two brothers made sure the feud seemed as real as possible by taking kayfabe to the extreme, so much so that they ignored each other even outside of the wrestling environment. Bret recalled how they would refuse to speak to each other even at Sunday lunch at their parents’ house in Calgary.
