Unhappiness Over Tony Khan “Money Mark” Comments On AEW Show
Kenny Omega was back in NJPW at Wrestle Dynasty but it was remarks about Tony Khan on commentary that seem to have stolen the headlines.
Wrestle Dynasty saw AEW and NJPW work together once again with a big show in the Tokyo Dome. That show saw Kenny Omega finally return to action after a year out as he defeated New Japan’s Gabe Kidd in an instant classic.
There was also a big win for Omega’s old Elite partners as The Young Bucks captured tag team gold once again. But a lot of the talk after the show was about controversial comments made by NJPW announcer Chris Charlton. Charlton laid into Tony Khan, calling him a “money mark” while making derogatory remarks about how AEW has used several former top NJPW talents. And these comments have not gone unnoticed.
Tony Khan Comments Cause Storm
Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer noted there was some unhappiness over Charlton’s comments:
I heard from someone in Japan who is very close to everything and basically said, there’s stuff going on there and they’re very unhappy about that. But he was watching the Japanese version so had no idea what it was. Obviously, the guys trying to sell an angle.
Meltzer’s co-host Bryan Alvarez noted that Charlton may have been trying to sell the storyline between Gabe Kidd and Kenny Omega:
Yes, there was an angle here with Gabe Kidd coming out with the New Japan trunks on and they’re trying to do a story here. But the issue people had was there’s a way to build up the rivalry without saying that Tony Khan is a money mark who stole Jay White and Okada and Kenny Omega and has done nothing with them since.
AEW and NJPW will work together again at Forbidden Door in August 2025 which will take place in London, England.
