More Unhappiness Backstage Following The Rock’s WWE Return
The Rock’s presence has caused more unrest backstage.
On February 21, The Rock returned to SmackDown in an appearance that sparked more questions than answers. In a sprawling promo where he repeatedly alternated between babyface and heel, the veteran told Cody Rhodes he wanted him to become “his” World Champion.
He added that he didn’t want Rhodes’ title; instead, he wanted his soul.
The pair are now scheduled to come face to face at Elimination Chamber as Rhodes gives The Final Boss his answer.
According to a report following his appearance on SmackDown, several people within WWE are unhappy with The Rock “changing the game plan” as the company moves towards Elimination Chamber and WrestleMania.
However, it seems that wasn’t the end of it.
Writing in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer claimed that several people were upset that the advertising was completely changed for Elimination Chamber, with everyone removed from the poster and replaced by the Hollywood star.
There were several people upset internally this week when the main Chamber ad took everyone off the ad and it was replaced with a new ad with only the photo of Dwayne Johnson.
Despite the unrest from some within the company, Meltzer noted that WWE sold an extra 2,300 more tickets after The Rock said he would be at Elimination Chamber on March 1.
The Rock Promises More Chaos
Following his appearance on SmackDown, The Rock promised more “disruptive moves” when he appears at Elimination Chamber. The Great One gave no hint at what he might have planned but added that he loves playing The Final Boss character.
This isn’t the first time an appearance from the star has caused frustration, as it was recently noted that people within WWE were angry at The Rock following his appearance at Bad Blood in October, as he’d already told the company he wouldn’t be wrestling at WrestleMania.
The appearance will be The Rock’s first at Elimination Chamber since beating CM Punk to retain the WWE Championship in 2013.
