Trish Stratus Details Who Pitched Her About 2023 WWE Return
Trish Stratus said that a top star in WWE reaching out to her led to a surprisingly long run in 2023.
It was in September 2006 when Trish Stratus retired as a full-timer in WWE after spending over six memorable years in the company. Since then, the WWE Hall of Famer has returned for some big matches and short-term angles until she decided to return for more in 2023.
At WrestleMania 39 in Los Angeles, Trish Stratus teamed up with her best friend Lita and Becky Lynch to defeat Damage CTRL in a six-woman tag team match. A few weeks later, Stratus did a cheap attack to take out Lita and then turned on Lynch after they lost a tag team match.
This would lead to Stratus having a lengthy rivalry with Lynch that lasted about five months. At WWE Payback in September 2023, Lynch beat Stratus in a terrific cage match to end the rivalry and end Stratus’ return run.
In an interview with Kenny McIntosh of Inside The Ropes, Stratus talked about being a heel for the 2023 return. It was her first time being a heel since 2005.
“I’d like to surprise people too, and do it a little different and then I thought as a performer, I would like to challenge myself and do heel run because I hadn’t touched that for so many years”
Trish Stratus Says Becky Lynch Pitched The Rivalry
As for who pitched the storyline, Trish credits Becky Lynch for that. It was a way to have a top female star from a previous era (Trish) face off against a top star from the current era of WWE. As Stratus showed during the rivalry, she can still hold her own in the ring and on the microphone.
“She [Lynch] called me and said do you want to come back and do a match with me at WrestleMania? We thought it’d be cool of like me turning on Lita as you’re more invested on me turning on my friend of 20 years than me and Becky. We had no television history at that point so yeah I was supposed to come in for a little bit after WrestleMania, turn heel, do a little something and then suddenly I was in a storyline every single week for the next six months.”
Trish Stratus returned to WWE television screens at Money in the Bank in her hometown of Toronto. Stratus was the event’s guest host and had an interesting exchange with Miss Money in the Bank Tiffany Stratton. The two women certainly teased a potential match down the road.
