Triple H Welcomes Rey Fenix To WWE After Debut Match (VIDEO)
Rey Fenix is officially a WWE superstar, and he was greeted by Triple H after his first match in the company.
After spending over five years in AEW, Rey Fenix was finally let go from his contract in early March. It’s not like Fenix had a bad run in AEW because he was a former Tag Team Champion, Trios Tag Team Champion, and International Champion in his AEW career, but he was ready to move on.
Leading up to his WWE debut match, some videos aired on SmackDown to tease a new masked superstar who is a high-flier and skilled at jumping off the ropes. On the March 28th edition of SmackDown, WWE confirmed that Rey Fenix was going to make his debut a week later.
It was reported that WWE wanted Fenix to debut against Andrade, but the company decided not to do a backstage segment with Andrade that would have teased the match.
At WWE SmackDown in Chicago, Rey Fenix made his official debut by facing off against NXT Tag Team Champion, Nathan Frazer. It was an interesting decision to put Fenix against Frazer, who is not a main roster wrestler, but stylistically, they matched up well as two guys who are known for their speed in the ring.
The match between Fenix and Frazer was fast-paced, with each guy hitting some incredible moves. Fenix hit a Fire Driver that looked like it might win the match, but Frazer kicked out. Fenix finished off Frazer after a spin kick to the head and a Mexican Muscle Buster (MMB) for the pinfall win.
During the match, it was acknowledged that Fenix is the younger brother of WWE Raw superstar Penta and they are known as the Lucha Brothers together.
Triple H Shares Backstage Video With Rey Fenix
After the match, Fenix said it wasn’t just the debut of Rey Fenix because it was so much more. Fenix said he’s reborn with love and with passion. Fenix said he’s waited his whole life to say this: “I am WWE.” Fenix bowed down in the ring to pay tribute to the fans.
There was a backstage segment after the match where Santos Escobar was with his Legado Del Fantasma buddies Angel & Berto. Escobar said that Fenix’s win was the kind of performance he expects from them. Berto seemed unimpressed and said that he is better than Fenix. Escobar said he’ll talk to GM Nick Aldis and make it happen.
Later in the show, Fenix vs. Berto was made official for the April 11th edition of SmackDown.
On social media, WWE’s Chief Content Officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque was shown backstage talking to Rey Fenix. They exchanged a hug as Fenix likely spoke to him while Triple H replied by saying, “Just getting started.”
