Triple H Analyzes Why Gunther Lost World Title at WWE SummerSlam
Gunther lost his World Heavyweight Championship to CM Punk at the main event of SummerSlam’s first night on Saturday.
As the reigning champion, the Australian wrestler put on a dominant performance against The Best in the World, but a costly mistake ultimately cost him his title. One key moment that led to The Ring General’s defeat was a brutal table spot.
During the match, Gunther was busted open after crashing through a table, which left blood streaming down his face and temporarily blinded him. The SummerSlam crowd at MetLife Stadium witnessed The Second City Saint capitalize on his opponent’s vulnerable state, hitting back-to-back two GTS finishers to secure the victory and claim his first World Heavyweight Championship in over a decade.
Triple H Explains How Gunther Lost to CM Punk
Speaking on the SummerSlam post-show media conference, Triple H broke down the key moments that led to Gunther’s loss. As both a WWE creative mind and legendary competitor, Triple H offered insight into the turning points that shifted the match’s momentum and ultimately handed Punk the championship.
“When you have a match like that with a guy like Gunther, you are looking.. To me, if I am inside of Punk’s mind, I am just waiting for the opportunity with this guy, makes a mistake or does something, and if I can just survive the onslaught, that is the only shot I’ve got,” Hunter explained.
He added, “[CM Punk]Waited for the mistake. When the mistake was made, and Gunther came up a wounded animal, Punk had to capitalize quick, and he did, and it cost Gunther the World Heavyweight Championship.” [59:44 – 1:00:13]
Despite all the efforts that CM Punk put into defeating The Aussie star, he didn’t walk away with gold on Saturday night. Seth Rollins made a surprise return and cashed in his Money in the Bank briefcase on his arch-nemesis to become the new World Heavyweight Champion.
