A highly-rated AEW star will be heading back to Japan.

After making his AEW debut back in 2021 while still based in Japan, All Elite fans quickly fell in love with Konosuke Takeshita. The star’s stunning blend of strength and speed made him a sure-fire hit with fans, and there were immediate calls for him to be signed up.

These fans got their wish in late 2022, and Takeshita has since gone on to become a TV regular, which included a run with the International Championship. Many now expect it’s just a matter of time until he takes the company’s top prize. However, it seems he’ll be looking elsewhere for glory first.

Konosuka Takeshita Will Take A Break From AEW

Writing in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer noted that Takeshita is featured prominently on the poster for the 2025 G1 Climax Tournament. As such, he will likely be absent from AEW programming between July 18 and August 17.

“Konosuke Takeshita is on a G-1 Climax poster, which indicates him being in the tournament. The names in the tournament are going to be announced at Dominion and the lineups shortly after. G-1 will be from 7/18 to 8/17, so Takeshita will be absent from AEW during that time frame.”

Takeshita also took part in the prestigious tournament in 2024, advancing to the quarter-finals after finishing second in B Block. However, that’s where his run ended after a loss to Yota Tsuji.

However, this would still leave Takeshita theoretically free to appear at All In Texas on July 12 if required.

Although the card is yet to be filled out, it’s been confirmed that Takeshita’s teammate in the Don Callis family, Kazuchika Okada, will wrestle the biggest match of his AEW career at the event. In Texas, Okada will square off against long-time rival Kenny Omega in a huge unification match for the Continental and International Championships. The winner will be known as the Unified Champion.
