One of the biggest names in AEW admits he was feeling nervous prior to a lengthy promo battle with MJF.

When it comes to promos in pro wrestling today, there are few wrestlers (no matter the company) that are as skilled as the current AEW World Champion, Maxwell Jacob Friedman aka MJF.

Following MJF’s most recent AEW World Title defense at Double or Nothing last month when he defeated three opponents, a new challenger has stepped up: Adam Cole.

It was on the June 7th episode of AEW Dynamite when MJF and Cole had a lengthy promo battle. As usual with Friedman, he praised his opponent and even said he looked up to Cole for years, but then MJF let the insults fly as usual. Cole fired back as well. It left fans arguing about who “won” the promo battle, but what really mattered is they made us want to see the champion face his new challenger.

On the June 14th edition of AEW Dynamite, MJF and Cole had an outstanding match that reached the 30-minute time limit, which meant it was ruled a draw. Cole wants another shot at Friedman, but the champion doesn’t want to do that.

Adam Cole was recently against on the Extreme Life of Matt Hardy podcast where the former WWE NXT and ROH World Champion admitted he had some nerves going into it.

“So there was a lot of excitement going into this. So I don’t know if intimidation is the right word, but it very much felt like a sink or swim type of situation for me, which was really exciting. It was like, ‘Alright, listen, I’m gonna go toe to toe with,’ like you said, what many consider, what I consider, one of the best talkers, one of the best guys of the generation in MJF. And either people are going to think I can hang with him, or they’re gonna think that he ate me alive.

“And I loved that feeling of going out there and going, ‘Oh God, we’ll see how this goes.’ So it was really exciting for me, actually, to be tested in that way. And just to be able to show everybody that I’ll go toe to toe with anybody on the microphone. So it was very, very exciting for me. But yeah, definitely had some nerves and some butterflies going on.”

Adam Cole and MJF will both be in action at AEW-NJPW Forbidden Door this Sunday, June 25th in Toronto. Cole faces Tom Lawlor while MJF defends the AEW World Title against the legendary Hiroshi Tanahashi.
