Tony Schiavone On Chris Jericho’s Backstage Role In AEW

Chris Jericho continues to add even more different hats to his collection while in AEW.

After signing a three-year extension on his AEW contract, Chris Jericho will gradually shift towards more work backstage. Exactly what that entails hasn’t been made clear but AEW commentator Tony Schiavone has shed some light on the situation.

Speaking on the Ask Tony Anything Show, Schiavone explained what Jericho’s doing backstage right now:

“He’s just kind of a leader of the locker room. When we have locker room meetings, he kind of runs things. There’s a number of athletes that he’s kind of in charge of their creative. And other than that, he’s just a guy that has a lot of clout, and because he has a lot of clout, when he says something the wrestlers take it to heart.”

At this time, these new roles of Jericho’s are unofficial as nothing formal has been announced. Schiavone went on to elaborate that Jericho’s position backstage could basically be summed up as “team captain”.

Jericho’s apparent elevation to an Undertaker-like locker room leader position comes on the heels of near upheaval following the All Out fallout. With CM Punk still gone and The Elite’s reputation shattered, Chris Jericho – along with Jon Moxley and Bryan Danielson – has stepped up to assume a veteran role in AEW’s locker room.
