Tony Schiavone Names His Favourite Match He Ever Did Commentary For
During a recent episode of his “What Happened When” podcast, legendary announcer Tony Schiavone opened up about the single most memorable match he ever called behind the microphone during his lengthy career.
Tony Schiavone surprised many fans by revealing that his favourite commentary experience wasn’t from his lengthy tenure with WCW or his current role with AEW, but rather from his brief stint with the WWF in 1989. The match was Hulk Hogan vs. the Big Boss Man in a steel cage at Madison Square Garden.
My first foray into Madison Square Garden, when people ask me what’s the one match I remember more than any, that is the one match I remember more than any throughout my career.
The match itself, which saw Hogan emerge victorious holds special significance for Schiavone not necessarily because of its in-ring quality, but because of what it represented in his professional journey.
It’s not to slight any other match, it’s not the best match I’ve seen, but because it was my first time in MSG, it’s memorable because I came from Jim Crockett Promotions.
What made the occasion even more extraordinary was the demanding schedule that followed. After appearing on the afternoon show at Madison Square Garden, everyone immediately boarded a flight to Boston, where Tony Schiavone along with Lord Alfred Hayes would call the same main event match later that evening at the Boston Garden.
Being in Madison Square Garden for the first time and knowing that we’re going to get on a flight and fly to Boston Garden to do a night show, it to me, was just like ‘Wow, I have made the big time’. In reality I had at that time.
Though Schiavone’s WWF run would be short-lived before he returned to WCW where he would later become the voice of Monday Nitro during the Monday Night Wars, this particular moment stands as a career highlight for the announcer who has called countless championship matches, including many featuring wrestling legends like Ric Flair, Sting, and Goldberg.

In another recent edition of his podcast, Tony Schiavone voiced his concerns about the lessening role of house shows in professional wrestling, calling them “one of them lost arts” as he was watching footage of a WCW house show from Manchester, England.
