Why Tony Khan Waited To Do Major Match At AEW WrestleDream

Tony Khan AEW

Tony Khan has explained why he held off on doing a particular match until AEW WrestleDream.

There was a surprising title change at the AEW All Out PPV in Toronto on September 20th when Toni Storm defended the AEW Women’s World Title against Kris Statlander, Thekla, and Jamie Hayter in a Fatal 4-Way Match.

It was a match where most people likely expected Storm to continue her fourth reign as the AEW Women’s World Champion. Instead, Statlander used the seatbelt pinning move to trap the champion Storm, who was unable to kick out, and Statlander became the AEW Women’s World Champion for the first time.

Even though Statlander has been with AEW for six years and Storm has been part of the company for over three years, AEW’s Owner/booker, Tony Khan, has kept them apart when it comes to singles matches.

During the AEW WrestleDream media conference call, Tony Khan explained that he wanted to wait until the right time to have Statlander face Storm in a singles match. That match will take place at WrestleDream on October 18th when Statlander defends the AEW Women’s World Title against Storm.

“We’ve got another great former World Champion, ‘Timeless’ Toni Storm, taking on the AEW World Champion Kris Statlander. That is the first time they’ve ever wrestled one-on-one, and it is by design.

That has always been a match that I knew would be a major match on a major event, and when the time was right, it would be one of the biggest matches I think we could put on and I’m really excited for it. I think they’ve been doing fantastic work in the promos.” (H/T Fightful)
