Tony Khan Rules Out Unique AEW Clause For Darby Allin
Tony Khan backs Darby Allin to look after himself.
Inside the ring, Darby Allin has never met a risk he wouldn’t take. His wild wrestling style has endeared him to fans across the world, while also managing to scare them to death in the process.
To date in AEW, Allin has been launched onto an upturned set of steel steps, thrown down a flight of stairs, fell off a ladder through a pane of glass, and more. In short, Allin has taken more risks in his relatively short career than most people take in a lifetime.
Not that he’s known to take things easy when he’s not wrestling either. The star remains determined to climb Mt Everest, and he’s regularly performing all kinds of insane stunts just for kicks.
During an interview with Levack and Goz on Fox Sports Radio, Tony Khan ruled out putting a clause into Allin’s contract to stop him from performing dangerous stunts outside the ring. Such clauses are widespread in the world of sports with managers and team owners looking to protect their star assets.
“No, I haven’t because I think that’s one of the things that makes Darby so unique and special. He is always at the forefront, always at the cutting edge, he wants to try new things, and it’s that risk-taking, it’s that energy, these things make him so unique and I think also very appealing to the wrestling fans and I like to tap into that.
He takes big risks, but really, it’s the risks he takes in the ring as a wrestler that are even more dangerous than when he climbs Mount Everest or does some of the craziest motorcycle stunts you’ll ever see. This guy is just an absolute wizard in the ring and Darby Allin is definitely one of the great wrestlers and also one of the great risk-takers in the world right now.”
Tony Khan Dubs Darby Allin A Renaissance Man
Khan went on to explain that despite his apparent disregard for his own body in the ring, Allin puts an incredible amount of work into looking after himself after the final bell. The AEW boss said he expects Allin to have a lengthy career, despite concerns from fans and other wrestlers.
“He’s a renaissance man, a thinker, and active recovery and doing everything you can to preserve your body, that’s Darby Allin. He’s really very intelligent when it comes to recovery.
In sports across the board, these days, we’re seeing the top athletes able to preserve their bodies and last longer. It’s more common to see an elite athlete compete at the top level a little later into their career today vs. several years ago, and recovery is a huge reason for that.
And Darby Allin is a great young wrestler, and a lot of people have predicted that the way he wrestles, the dangerous style Darby Allin does, that he’s not going to be able to do this day in day out, week in week out, for the rest of his career. Well, I do think he’s going to be able to hold up.
I do think that Darby Allin will continue to have a long and fruitful pro wrestling career despite all the big risks he takes because, like you said, he’s at the forefront of recovery.”
The comments from Khan come after Darby Allin lifted the lid on the extreme lengths he goes to after his matches. The former TNT Champion described the downstairs of his house as “looking like a laboratory” packed with breathing apparatus, saunas, ice baths, and more.
Allin added that he wants to make sure he can be as crazy as possible for as long as possible.
