Tony Khan Responds To Controversial WWE Policy
Tony Khan has given his thoughts on WWE’s tactics in 2025.
Throughout 2025, WWE has made a concerted attempt to counter AEW programming. This has seen several NXT go up against AEW shows, but things went to a whole new level in July.
During All In weekend, WWE put Saturday Night’s Main Event and The Great American Bash on the same day as the AEW event, and Evolution 24 hours later.
This was followed by reports that WWE will look to use TNA as a way of taking the fight to AEW. The report said that the sports entertainment giant is looking to help TNA secure a new TV deal that will see Impact move to Wednesday nights to go head-to-head with Dynamite.
Fast forward to September 20, and AEW moved All Out to an earlier timeslot after WWE announced that its partnership with ESPN would launch on the same night with Wrestlepalooza.
Tony Khan Unmoved By WWE Tactics
During a new interview with Ariel Helwani, Tony Khan was asked about WWE’s apparent attempts to counter-program AEW events. He said that WWE going up against so many AEW events was certainly on purpose, but added that it’s to be expected.
“I do think it’s done on purpose, and I understand it, and it’s part of wrestling. And I think we’ve seen a lot of it, but I think other wrestling promotions that have been the challenger wrestling brand in our lifetime have seen a lot of it.”
Khan went on to highlight how this kind of competition has happened regularly in the past, going all the way back to Jim Crockett Promotions.
“Jim Crockett promotions, which was the forerunner to WWE, saw a lot of this. And Jim Crockett promotions ended up having to sell the company to Ted Turner, who then made a great run. It took a while.
And really, if you look Ted Turner took over at the start of 1989 and the strongest run came over six years later, almost seven years later, it started, really, when business peaked and took off their peak years.”
Turning the attention back to AEW more specifically, Khan said that WWE’s counter-program hasn’t impacted the success his company has had.
“I do think that we’ve seen that kind of counter programming in those things, and I understand, and looking back at wrestling history, kind of expect that and frustrate you. I think it’s okay, because for us, it’s always worked out, and we’re in a great position.
So it hasn’t ever been a thing where it’s cost us anything. And even when you do something like AEW All In Texas, where we do the show in the afternoon, it really worked out for us great. And it was one of the best days in the history of the company. I think that it’s something that is a part of the wrestling business, and I definitely don’t take it personally.”
