Tony Khan Hints At New AEW Women’s Championship
Tony Khan has been asked about the introduction of a new AEW championship.
Back in January, Kris Statlander said that the time is right for AEW to introduce a women’s Continental Classic tournament.
AEW’s answer to NJPW’s legendary G1 Climax was introduced in 2023, with 12 wrestlers split into two blocks, and the top two in each group advancing to the semi-finals. The inaugural tournament was won by Eddie Kingston, while Kazuchika Okada emerged victorious in 2024.
The winner is also awarded the Continental Championship.
While speaking to Q93, Tony Khan was again asked about the possibility of a women’s Continental Classic. In response, he said that the tournament could be “something very interesting,” but a lot of his potential plans will hinge on keeping everyone fit and healthy.
“We’ve got the Women’s World Title and the TBS Title. I think that the Continental would be something very interesting.
We had some injuries happen in the women’s division earlier this year at the All In pay-per-view. I think it would be a great thing if we get the division healthy, where we’ve got all of our top fighters ready to go, that could be a really great thing. That’s a very intense tournament with matches every week.
I am very open to it, especially if we can get all the top wrestlers healthy to compete.”
Tony Khan Welcoming New Face To AEW Dynamite Commentary
On September 6, it was announced that Bryan Danielson would be joining the commentary team on AEW Dynamite full-time. The American Dragon proved to be a big hit with fans in the role during Forbidden Door.
In a later interview, Tony Khan explained the decision, commenting that it made sense to get the former AEW World Champion back on television. He added that he believes Danielson willl contribute “very intelligent, insightful commentary.”
