Tony Khan Officially Introduces New AEW Championship

Tony Khan AEW

Move over Mercedes Mone, Tony Khan might be the biggest belt collector in wrestling after all, as a new AEW title has been revealed.

AEW is currently in the middle of a tournament to crown its inaugural Women’s Tag Team Champions. The Babes of Wrath, Willow Nightingale and Harley Cameron moved on to the semi-final of that competition with a shock win over Mercedes Mone and Athena on the November 5th edition of Dynamite.

Julia Hart and Skye Blue were the first team to make the semi-final when they defeated Queen Aminata and Jamie Hayter.

With that title becoming the tenth official AEW championship, one more surely won’t hurt.

Tony Khan Introduces AEW National Championship

In a video released on social media, Tony Khan revealed that the AEW National Championship will be introduced at Full Gear, where the first titleholder will be crowned. Khan noted that a Casino Gauntlet match will be held at the next pay-per-view, with the winner becoming the inaugural AEW National Champion.

Khan noted the title will be defended across the globe and in different promotions, naming New Japan Pro Wrestling and Ring of Honor.

The November 5th edition of Dynamite saw the first participants in that match confirmed as The Hurt Syndicate’s Bobby Lashley and Shelton Benjamin will be involved, as will Ricochet.

The new title is a nod to the NWA National Championship introduced in 1980, and was held by legends such as Jack Brisco and Dusty Rhodes. That title was eventually unified with the NWA United States Heavyweight Championship in 1986, but was revived in 1997 and remains part of the NWA promotion to this day.
