Tony Khan Open To Holding State-Sponsored AEW Events

Tony Khan has refused to rule out hosting state-sponsored AEW events in the future.

Since 2018, WWE has pushed forward with an increasingly close relationship with Saudi Arabia. This has seen multiple events held in the kingdom every year since, while things will go up another level in 2026, as it hosts the Royal Rumble.

The relationship has been part of a wider WWE strategy to expand outside of North America, and events in the likes of Australia, France, Germany, and more have become the norm.

However, the deal with Saudi Arabia in particular has come in for significant criticism, due to the kingdom’s poor human rights record, treatment of the LGBTQ community, allegations of sportswashing, and political tension stemming from the assassination of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

During a new interview with WFAA, Tony Khan was asked about WWE’s deal with Saudi Arabia and whether AEW would consider similar agreements. He explained that while it would depend on the situation, it’s not something he would rule out.

“Well, it depends on the situation. I think, you know, it’s all about the details. So it would have to be a deal that made sense for that territory, and especially for us here at AEW.”

Tony Khan Happy To Let Fans Call The Shots

Speaking elsewhere, Tony Khan opened up about the impact AEW fans have on how he books and formats tapings and pay-per-views. The AEW boss stressed the importance of listening to fans and feedback online, dismissing criticism that he gives these voices too much attention.

He went on to claim that All on July 12 will be the biggest event in the company’s entire history.
