Real Reason Tony Khan Held Off AEW Tournament Brackets Reveal

The real reason Tony Khan did not reveal brackets for a new AEW tag team tournament straight away has been revealed.

On the July 23rd edition of AEW Dynamite, a tournament was announced to determine the next tag team title challengers. Whoever wins the tournament will challenge The Hurt Syndicate at Forbidden Door on August 24th in London, England.

FTR defeated Jetspeed in the first round of that tournament, but fans were baffled when the brackets were revealed and they were the only two teams listed. And it seems an injury to one star planned to be in the tournament caused Tony Khan to hold off on a full reveal.

Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer explained why Tony Khan refused to reveal any brackets until a replacement for a hurt star had been confirmed on-screen:

The reason there were no brackets on that first week, he wanted to do the brackets, and then Colten Gunn got hurt, okay. So he’s gonna put Juice Robinson and Austin Gunn as a team, but he didn’t want to announce that until he shot the thing where they got together. He didn’t want to put brackets out until he had all the teams.

The full brackets have since been announced for the tournament and The Young Bucks advanced to the next round by defeating The Outrunners.
