Tony Khan Finally Explains Motive Behind Airing CM Punk’s Brawl Footage

CM Punk

CM Punk officially joined AEW in August 2021. It was his much-anticipated return to the squared circle after almost a decade.

The Best in the World brought significant viewership to All Elite Wrestling’s product and helped the promotion grow.

However, things did not work out between Punk and AEW, and he left the company in September 2023 and returned to WWE in the same year.

Tony Khan gives his insight about CM Punk’s backstage brawl

It so happens that CM Punk had a backstage brawl with Jack Perry over creative differences and conduct. This led AEW to remove Punk from the company, effectively immediately. Even after he left the company, the promotion released the video of the backstage brawl.

On his appearance on the Ariel Helwani Show, Tony Khan was asked about the security footage. He explained that he doesn’t agree with how it was described, and the video spoke for itself about why things could not work out between AEW and CM Punk.

It’s interesting, because I do think that I didn’t necessarily agree with the description of how it all happened. No, [it wasn’t a way of showing Punk up after speaking with Ariel Helwani] and I very much think you’re a great interviewer, and I very much appreciate it, because we’ve had a very, very good interview, and I think I’ve been very good to answer the questions so far.

Now you’ve got me enjoying talking to you so much. So, I want to answer your questions — even the challenging ones. I didn’t necessarily agree with everything that was said in that interview about how things happened, but also it’s a TV show, and [playing the video] did a very strong number, and if you look, it made sense. It was a thing that was advertised, it got a lot of attention, and it got a very strong number, and it’s in the eye of the beholder. [h/t: Ringside News]
