Tony Khan Explains Delay To New AEW Women’s Championship

Tony Khan’s big plans for AEW are on hold.

Throughout 2025, Tony Khan and his creative team have placed an increased focus on the women’s division. This has seen “Timeless” Toni Storm fully establish herself as one of the biggest stars in the entire industry, while Mercedes Mone has seen her own star shine brighter than ever.

In recent months, several women have also split off into factions, leading to speculation that new Women’s Tag Team Championships could be on the horizon. In fact, during a media appearance back in May, Tony Khan said introducing the titles was something he was keen to do.

Tony Khan Confirms New AEW Championship On The Way

During a new appearance on Wrestfriends with Iridian Fierro, Tony Khan confirmed that the Women’s Tag Team Championship is on the way and that the belts have already been made. However, he’s not yet ready to introduce them on television.

“I have the belts. I made the belts. They exist. But I will put them into play when we are able to put the very best roster forward.”

The AEW boss said that while the women’s roster is stacked with talent, several stars are currently unavailable.

“I have a bunch of people I would like to get involved in a women’s tag team tournament, potentially. There has been so much injury in the women’s division, and as the person who put together the women’s casino gauntlet, I wish that we had come out of it healthier. A quarter of the people in the match got knocked out of the match and out of action indefinitely.”

Khan mentioned that the likes of Thunder Rosa, Syuri, and Mina Shirakawa are all out of action before discussing the absent Jamie Hayter.

“One of the most important women in the division is Jamie Hayter, who has also been out.

I do want to get the division healthy because if I tried to do it right now, I would be missing a lot of the people, and I could do the tournament, but then I wouldn’t be able to have a healthy singles division at the same time,”

Meanwhile, it’s been reported that Tony Khan is now holding traditional production meetings ahead of TV tapings. In the past, Khan had been criticised for just meeting with individuals throughout the day. Some had suggested this led to miscomunications and disorganisation during shows.
