Tony Khan Clears Up Confusion Around AEW Unified Championship

Tony Khan has attempted to explain the creation of the AEW Unified Championship.

At All In, Kenny Omega and Kazuchika Okada will meet in singles action in AEW for the very first time.

Not only that, Omega’s International Championship and Okada’s Continental Championship will be on the line, with the winner declared the Unified Champion. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean that those championships will be disappearing.

During the All In media call, Khan said that despite comments online, neither championship will be retired. He added that the Unified Championship represents the significance of the match and Omega and Okada’s role in establishing AEW in the wrestling world.

In closing, Khan reiterated that both championships’ lineages will remain, at the winner at All In could carry all three title belts.

“I have never said I’m retiring the championships. I never said that. The Unified AEW Championship is new to us. Never before have two AEW singles championships been held by the same wrestler at the same time. It’s something very new.

We’re very proud of what we built with the International Championship and what we built with the Continental Championship, which is most closely identified with the incredible Continental Classic Tournament, which has been one of the real strong points of AEW in the past few years.

The Continental Classic will absolutely be back. The lineage of this Unified Championship would be intact with the International Championship and Continental Championship.

I created one Unified Championship belt to represent not only the significance of this match, the winner take all nature, that there would be one person carrying the lineage of these two championships after the match.

The belt itself represents the two champions who have gotten us to this point. Those two championships remain, their lineages remain, and the champion may even choose to carry all three championship belts. I wanted to create something special around this match and event.”

Tony Khan Hits Back At AEW Speculation

During the call, Tony Khan also dismissed online speculation that Mercedes Mone has creative control. Khan said the idea that it was Mone calling the shots was “ridiculous.” He added that while she’s among the talents he meets with multiple times per week, he has the final say on every storyline on TV.

Later on, Tony Khan hit back at claims that Britt Baker is looking to force her way out of AEW. It was recently reported that Baker was looking to find a way out of her contract as she felt there was nothing left for her in the company.

However, Khan said he hasn’t spoken with Baker about leaving and remains open to booking her in the future.
