Tony Khan Had Bigger Plans For The Briscoes/FTR Feud
AEW and ROH owner Tony Khan has admitted he wanted to feature The Briscoes and FTR more on television to build their epic feud even further.
The wrestling world was plunged into mourning on the 17th of January when the news broke that Jay Briscoe (Jamin Pugh) had been killed following a car accident. AEW was unable to produce a full tribute show to the star as Warner Bros. Discovery had not wanted to feature Briscoe following offensive Tweets he made ten years ago – Tweets he had long since apologised repeatedly for.
Mark Briscoe will make his debut for AEW on the 25th of January edition of Dynamite when he faces another Ring of Honor legend Jay Lethal in a tribute match for Jay.
In 2022, The Briscoes were involved in an epic feud in ROH that saw them put on a trio of critically acclaimed matches with FTR. That feud culminated with Mark and Jay defeating FTR for the ROH Tag Team Championship in a Double Dog Collar match at Final Battle.
Speaking on Busted Open Radio, Tony Khan discussed the feud between The Briscoes and FTR and says he wanted to be able to feature the program more on television:
“They had great matches and it’s hard to pick. It’s one of my favorite trilogies of all time. What they did last year in Ring of Honor, to have the amazing Tag Team Title match at Super Card of Honor, the great two-out-of-three falls match at Death Before Dishonor, and then at Final battle, to have the incredible dog collar match, I think the trilogy will stand the test of time.”
“I wanted to be able to do more to build these matches up on television, I really did. Within the best of my abilities, I tried to build the matches up and at least give them the platform to be able to have these matches even if we couldn’t do all the promos and stories on television that we wanted to.”
Following Jay Briscoe’s death, a fundraising page was set up to help his family, you can donate any support you can here.
