Tony Khan Confident Of Keeping Popular AEW Star Despite WWE Interest
Could Tony Khan lose another AEW star?
On June 6th it was reported that Penta El Zero Miedo’s AEW contract would be expiring sometime in August or September. To add to the intrigue, WWE holds an interest in signing the star, making him yet another high-profile name potentially heading into free agency.
Penta and his brother Rey Fenix joined AEW in 2019 and went on to become World Tag Team Champions and thirds of the Trios World Champions alongside PAC. There’s no word on Fenix’s contract status.
Writing in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer reported that Tony Khan remains confident about keeping Penta. However, there are others who the star will be looking to take advantage of free agency.
“Penta was unhappy some time back when he wasn’t allowed on shows with CMLL talent, but to a degree that looks like it’s been worked out. Tony Khan indicated he was confident Penta would stay with the promotion.
Others have said Penta was looking at buying the rights to his name, to make sure he could take the gimmick to WWE if necessary. The belief in other circles is Penta is looking at exploring his options when his current deal expires.”
Tony Khan Ready To Battle For WWE Star
The report comes after it was revealed WWE has made an “excellent” offer to Chad Gable in an effort to retain his services. It had previously been reported Gable could become a free agent on June 7th, despite being scheduled to face Sami Zayn at Clash at the Castle.
The same report added there are people within AEW already pushing Tony Khan to bring Gable in should he become available. However, from a legal standpoint, Gable would have to let his deal expire before holding any talks with AEW.
