The WWE Attitude Era Spot Vince McMahon Personally Rehearsed
Vince McMahon had to take the bullet during the Attitude Era as he personally rehearsed one of WWE’s most infamous moments.
In early 1998, the New Age Outlaws were the WWE Tag Team Champions and ran roughshod over the company. Road Dogg and Bad Ass Billy Gunn had already sent the Legion of Doom out of the company – for a spell – and had their sights set on doing the same to Cactus Jack and Chainsaw Charlie – better known as Mick Foley and Terry Funk.
On the February 2 1998 edition of Raw, the Outlaws trapped Cactus Jack and Chainsaw Charlie in a dumpster and sent them flying off the stage. The show then turned serious as ambulances arrived with medics working to help the stricken tag team as members of the locker room also appeared on the scene looking sombre.
But according to one of the instigators, Vince McMahon took the same bump himself.
Vince McMahon Dumpster Dives In WWE
Speaking to Chris Van Vliet, Road Dogg discussed the infamous moment and revealed nearly got heated for real with some of the other WWE stars that made their way out to check on Foley and Funk:
That was a great day and a great time. If you go back and watch that, it got so heated and real after the push down. I remember Bradshaw always beating me up for some reason, reaching over people and hitting us and stuff. It got crazy in a frenetic way that helped the situation.
Yeah, it got real for a second and it kind of felt real even to us for a second. Because all the talent came around, we didn’t talk about that, we didn’t rehearse that. So all of a sudden, everybody’s coming, and people are [upset]. Like I said, it’s 40 guys out there who are idiots.
As far as if he thought Foley and Funk had been hurt, Road Dogg noted he didn’t think they would be due to all the safety precautions taken but that Vince McMahon rehearsed the spot:
No [we didn’t think they were actually hurt]. We didn’t rehearse with them in the dumpster, but we rehearsed with Vince in the dumpster. Yep, that’s a true story, and I’ll say this about him. He would never ask anybody to do something that he wouldn’t do himself. That’s the truth.
Look, there were boxes and padding in there, and they drilled handles in there so they could hold it. We did the top down so the top wouldn’t open, so their hand wouldn’t go out or nothing. We made it as safe as possible. But then two humans just got pushed off the off the edge. And it wasn’t a huge drop, but it’s far enough to where you’re gonna hit, you’re in a crash.
Road Dogg clearly remembers things differently from Mick Foley which might be reasonable almost three decades later. Mick Foley has claimed he talked Vince McMahon out of taking the dumpster bump as he didn’t want the WWE Chairman to get hurt.
