The WWE Hall Of Famer Who Says They Felt Like An Animal Using Steroids
WWE Hall of Famer Jake Roberts opened up about his experiences with steroid use during his wrestling career in the 1970s and 80s, discussing the intense physical demands that pushed many wrestlers toward performance enhancers.
Speaking on his podcast, The Snake Pit, Roberts shed light on how prevalent steroid use was in his era and the profound impact it had on wrestlers’ bodies and lives.
Steroids turn you into an animal, they really do. You hunger for lifting; that’s all you want to do is lift.
According to Roberts, steroids helped him build a muscular physique, especially in his shoulders and chest, which was essential to fit the larger-than-life image of 80s wrestling. Beyond aesthetics, he highlighted how steroids helped wrestlers recover more quickly from injuries, which was critical for keeping up with a gruelling schedule that often involved seven-day workweeks and double bookings on weekends.
Roberts shared that he, like many wrestlers, relied on steroids to cope with the physical toll of constant performances. For example, after undergoing neck surgery, he found that steroids allowed him to heal faster and get back in the ring sooner. However, he also acknowledged the risks associated with steroid use and expressed concern over its lasting impact on his wrestling peers.
Reflecting on the legacy of steroid use, Roberts voiced sadness over the health toll it took on some of wrestling’s icons. Roberts noted that some wrestlers went “completely off the charts” with steroid usage, suggesting that excessive use contributed to the early deaths of fellow WWE Hall of Famers like Randy Savage, The Road Warriors, and Mr. Perfect.
