The Undertaker Wasn’t Sure Two WWE Icons Would Make It
The Undertaker reveals his surprising opinion on two of WWE’s biggest names.
No two wrestlers have a more stacked resume than The Rock and John Cena. The Rock was responsible for putting wrestling on the map for a worldwide audience in the 1990s, and almost three decades and a commercially successful career in Hollywood later, he is a member of the Board of Directors of TKO Group, which owns WWE.
John Cena’s 23-year illustrious career saw him become a grand slam champion, 17-time WWE World Champion, a great heel, a great babyface, and, to top it all off, he even got to play the memorable character of The Peacemaker in the movie The Suicide Squad.
Their resumes are templates for success in WWE and other fields, but WWE Hall of Famer The Undertaker did not see it coming.
The Undertaker Reveals His First Impressions Of The Rock And John Cena
Speaking on his Six Feet Under Podcast, Undertaker was heard discussing John Cena’s retirement. He then made the shocking admission that he never felt that John Cena would make it in the business. The other star The Undertaker thought wouldn’t make it was Dwayne The Rock Johnson.
Early on there was two people that, I watched them work day one and I was like ‘This guy ain’t gonna make it’. I was wrong, I can admit when I was wrong. There’s some people in the business who can’t do that. I will tell you when I was wrong, and I missed with him. You know who the other one was? Dwayne.
The Rock originally debuted under the name Rocky Maiviya as a babyface that the crowd couldn’t relate to and hated. Undertaker recalls Rocky’s debut in Madison Square Garden
You’ve got to go back though, you’ve got to go back to day one when he had the things hanging off of him [his outfit], and he came out there and he was ‘Rah rah’, and he debuted in the Garden. I was like ‘Oh this poor kid’
And to have the legacy, obviously his grandfather High Chief Peter Maivia, his dad Rocky Johnson and then you have these expectations and you come out with that thing on. I was like ‘Oh man this is not gonna be good’.
Undertaker then admitted that it took the two icons a while to find their stride and ended by joking that they had “ok” careers.
It took them [Cena & Rock] a minute to find their stride and I guess they had ok careers.
