Why The Undertaker Really Never Jumped To WCW
The Undertaker has explained his decision to stick with WWE no matter how bad business got.
WWE is currently on a hot streak and breaking company records regularly. However, there was a time when business was so bad that it looked like the sports entertainment giant would be defeated by WCW in the Monday Night Wars of the 1990s.
Looking back on that time on Busted Open, Undertaker says there were times he would go out to the ring and barely see any fans in the arena. During that period, Kevin Nash called him to try to get him to jump to WCW.
“I’ve got Kevin Nash calling me and saying, ‘Hey man, I can get you this kind of money,’ and I’m like ‘Wow.’ On the phone, I’m half-ass entertaining it, but in my head, I know that I can’t.”
The Deadman admits he was tempted by the idea as he was under pressure to provide for his family. However, the Hall of Famer had quit WCW years earlier after being told he would never amount to anything, whereas Vince McMahon gave him a huge opportunity as a star attraction.
“The temptation is screwing with me, but I know deep inside – it’s crazy, it’s hard to describe – like deep down inside of me I know that I can’t, because I knew that man [Vince McMahon] gave me an opportunity. that other company [WCW], although the leadership and everything had changed by now, to me it was still the same company that told me I would never draw a dime.”
While business was bad, Undertaker admits to considering swallowing his pride and going back to WCW, or even wrestling in Japan. However, in the end he chose to stick with WWE because of the opportunity McMahon gave him.
“Eventually the thought was, ‘I’m crawling in this foxhole with him.'”
Despite the former WWE Chairman currently battling allegations of sexual assault and human trafficking, The Undertaker was spotted with Vince McMahon at the Super Bowl, showing his continued loyalty.
