The Undertaker Comments on Boneyard Match at WrestleMania, Wrestling AJ Styles, Unholy Trinity, More

It’s a rare thing to have a post on a website like ours where we can share highlights of an interview with The Undertaker breaking character, but here we are. You may have seen the WWE Network documentary teaser last weekend with about 15 minutes of footage about The Undertaker and in the past few years, he’s also been more active on social media sites like Instagram and Twitter. There was also the Broken Skull Sessions interview by Steve Austin where The Undertaker opened up like never before. It’s a case of the 55-year-old Undertaker wanting to open up more with fans on his nearly 30 years in WWE and even more years in the wrestling business before that.

Now that the world is dealing with the health crisis, The Undertaker seems to be even more willing to open himself up to wrestling fans. On Friday night, The Undertaker talked to the guys of Nine Line Apparel on Instagram and shared some details of his Boneyard Match at WrestleMania against AJ Styles among other topics. If you saw WrestleMania or read my review then you know that the Boneyard Match was a taped match that was more like a movie fight scene rather than a traditional wrestling match. It was well-received by wrestling fans too. Here are some highlights with thanks to WrestlingInc for the transcript.

The Undertaker on being proud of the Boneyard Match at WrestleMania:

“Obviously, we always envisioned this match happening in a live arena. Somewhere in the last couple of weeks, we didn’t even know what was going to happen the next day. The idea was thrown at me at doing something off-site. I was like, yeah, that’s a much better option than trying to have a match that AJ and The Undertaker would have inside an empty arena. In our case, we were very fortunate to go off-site and do what we did.”

“The final product — I couldn’t be more proud of it. Under the circumstances, all the different things going on, everybody pulled together and put something like that out there that was different and was intriguing. I can’t speak for AJ, but I’m very proud of what we did.”

Styles has said in recent comments on his Mixer channel that he really liked the match as well.

The Undertaker on the concept of what a Boneyard Match was:

“If I would have made the match, I would have said, ‘Okay, this is a Buried Alive Match.’ AJ Styles doesn’t know anything about Buried Alive Matches, he called it a Boneyard Match, he’s the one who made the match, so, now it’s a Boneyard Match. Even Buried Alive Matches generally happened in the arena, so I think we were just trying to give our audience something like, ‘What is that?’ We try to add a little bit of intrigue and get people talking.”

The Undertaker on the possibility of doing more matches like the Boneyard Match:

“Because that one was so successful it lends to that (more matches like that), but you gotta — not to give myself a pat on the back — you gotta have the right players to do that. Guys that really understand their characters and really still rely on that part of the business, not just the athletic side of the business. I think more guys kind of lean that way now. Where for me that put me right back in my wheelhouse and AJ can work with a broom handle and put a four-star match on.”

The Undertaker on what he meant by the Unholy Trinity of characters in a pre-WrestleMania promo:

“When AJ threw that first stone and made this personal, then it made it a no brainer. I couldn’t stay that mainstream Undertaker and be able to respond and deal with the things he was saying in that character. A lot of people were curious, ‘What is the Unholy Trinity?’ Well, the Unholy Trinity that I referenced was The Deadman, The Badass, and the man himself, Mark Calaway, and I put them all together. My brain was working that way, it was the unification of all these three entities into one person.”

The Undertaker also talked about other things in the interview like the difficulty of trying to perform in front of no fans, praise for women’s matches, the Edge/Orton match at WrestleMania, he talked about his wife Michelle McCool and more.
