The Rock Working On New Book

The Rock on WWE Raw

The Rock is set to co-write a book on Hawaii’s criminal underworld.

Back in February, it was announced that Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson will be part of Martin Scorcese’s next movie project alongside Lionardo DiCaprio and Emily Blunt. The as-yet-untitled movie will tell the true story of the rise of Wilford ‘Nappy’ Pulawa, the head of ‘The Company,’ a notorious crime syndicate in Hawaii.

As well as the movie, Deadline has reported that Johnson will be co-writing a book on the subject alongside journalist Nick Bilton, who is also writing the screenplay for the film. In a statement, Johnson explained that he agreed to the project because it “hit close to home,” with his family living through the era the movie and book chronicle.

“I’m honored to co-write this book and tell this story alongside Nick, with the incredible support of our partners at Crown. This isn’t just a gangster story, it’s about power, identity, and what was taken from the Hawaiian people.

“What drew me to this project wasn’t just the action and the intensity. For me, this story hits close to home. It’s not just history, it’s personal. My own family lived through parts of this era, and I’ve seen firsthand the complicated legacy it left behind. Telling this story is a way to honor our Polynesian culture, and honor where we come from and share the untold history of what really happened in paradise.”

Bilton also commented on the project, calling it a “one-in-a-generation” story.

“This is an incredibly exciting project to be part of — not only because of the gripping, untold story about Hawaii’s hidden underworld and the fascinating figures who shaped it, but also because of the chance to collaborate with such extraordinary talents as Dwayne and Gillian [Blake, Crown’s editor-in-chief] on this book. Stories like this truly come along once in a generation, and I’m thrilled we’re bringing it to life together.”
