The Rock Unmoved By Smashing Machine Box Office Flop

The Rock isn’t concerned with the box office.

Despite a great deal of hype, not only about the movie but also The Rock’s performance, The Smashing Machine fell well short of box office expectations.

The film generated just $11.3 million domestically and $20.2 million worldwide against a budget of a reported $50 million. Despite the disappointment, The Rock has claimed that he wasn’t interested in the numbers.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, The Rock said the movie was about much more than box office performance, so he’s at peace with how things turned out.

“Smashing Machine also represents a turning point in my career that I’ve wanted for a long time: for the first time in my career — 20 plus years since The Scorpion King came out — I made a film to challenge myself and to really rip myself open and to go elsewhere and disappear and transform, and not one time did I think about box office.

In our world you’re like, “Sh*t, how are we going to look?” And then Friday night comes and you’re like, “Oh man.” You wake up Saturday, and sometimes you wake up feeling good, and sometimes you’re like, “Oh my God, didn’t do well.”

I had not thought about that at all. And even that Friday night when we opened, I went to sleep peacefully and woke up peacefully because it represented this thing. And even though we didn’t do well [at the box office], or as well as we wanted to, it was okay because it just represented the thing I did for me.”

The Rock To Make WWE Return?

Away from Hollywood, Cody Rhodes has hinted that WWE fans might not have seen the last of The Rock in the ring.

During a new interview, Rhodes said that the veteran had only “scratched the surface” of his Final Boss character. A comment many fans took to mean that The Great One isn’t done with the persona or as an on-screen performer.

Rhodes and The Rock were wrapped in a heated rivalry through the first part of 2024, and The Rock teamed with Roman Reigns to beat Rhodes and Seth Rollins at WrestleMania 40. On the following episode of Raw, the pair planted the seeds for a singles match, but it’s yet to come to fruition.
