The Rock “Not Scheduled” For WWE Return

The Rock

It’s looking increasingly unlikely that The Rock will wrestle at WrestleMania 40.

The Rock has been linked with a return to the ring for a decade against a variety of opponents. The star was said to be in line for a match with a match against Brock Lesnar as far back as WrestleMania 30, and in more recent years WWE has left the door open for a huge match with his real-life cousin Roman Reigns.

The man himself has even revealed that he agreed to face Reigns at WrestleMania 39 before eventually backing out.

With attention slowly turning to WrestleMania 40, the annual speculation around a potential match for The Rock is underway. However, a recent report has dismissed the popular narrative that suggested that the decision about a match lies with the WWE legend.

This has been followed by a report from Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, that claims the truth is somewhere in the middle. Meltzer explains that if The Rock wants to wrestle it seems impossible that WWE would turn him down, but he’s not being factored into plans for WrestleMania 40.

Meltzer adds that a match between Reigns and The Great One isn’t currently scheduled.

“Regarding the stories that WWE won’t do Rock vs. Reigns at Mania if Rock wants to do it, what we were told is this. If he wants the spot I can’t believe WWE would turn him down but after Johnson turned it down last year, nobody is going with the idea he’s going to do it this year.

The match is not scheduled, unlike at this time last year when the match was considered a good shot. The belief is that Johnson will have plenty of work once the strikes are over he’ll have plenty to do. What we were told is that Rock is not going to come back and win the title.”

The Rock Returned To WWE In September

The Rock made his most recent appearance on WWE television on the September 15th episode of SmackDown. The Hollywood megastar confronted Austin Theory, ran through some signature catchphrases, and left the star laying as Pat McAfee, who was making his own return also got involved.

The appearance was The Rock’s first for WWE since October 2019.
