The Rock Credits WWE Hall Of Famer As The Original Creator Of “Jabroni”
The Rock may be associated with the word “jabroni,” but he admits that he got it from a WWE Hall of Famer.
A significant reason why Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson became one of the most popular and successful pro wrestlers ever is his exceptional promo ability.
Once he dropped the Rocky Maivia gimmick and was allowed to cut promos, Rock really showed what he could do.
There were several words and phrases that Rock used throughout his career that people remember him by. One of the more popular ones is calling somebody a jabroni, which is another way of saying somebody is a loser or an idiot – that kind of thing.
The Rock Gives The Iron Sheik Credit For “Jabroni”
During an appearance on the New Heights podcast with NFL legends Jason and Travis Kelce, The Rock made it clear that while people associate “jabroni” with him, it was actually a word that WWE Hall of Famer The Iron Sheik made famous among his wrestling friends.
Since Rock grew up in the wrestling business because of his dad Rocky Johnson, he knew Sheik well, and obviously figured “jabroni” would work in wrestling promos.
“I do not own the word Jabroni. I think it’s just out there. I own the name The Rock… not Jabroni.
“Wait — I might own that because I own everything associated with The Rock… like ‘It doesn’t matter,’ ‘If you smell…’”
“Let me give him props — The Iron Sheik made that word famous. He used it, especially in the locker room. ‘Oh this jabroni, that jabroni.’ He would call people jabroni. That’s where I got it from.”
“It’s actually in the Webster’s Dictionary now and I get the credit for it… but it’s really The Iron Sheik.”
In the same interview, The Rock also mentioned that he does have some influence on the WWE creative process, but when it comes to somebody like John Cena, he lets him do his own thing in terms of picking opponents as part of his retirement tour.
