One WWE Star Might Be The Reason Gunther Turns Babyface
Gunther may be on the precipice of becoming a babyface.
The Ring General has an established heel persona, dating back to his days in NXT UK.
The months of April and May could have been the lowest point in his wrestling career, which started with him losing the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 41 to Jey Uso.
As the Austrian tapped out to Uso’s sleeper hold, he also said goodbye to his 259-day title reign.
Following the loss, he attacked commentator Michael Cole on the April 21 RAW episode. Cole’s commentary partner, Pat McAfee, intervened, but Gunther took him out with the sleeper hold.
He was then suspended by the WWE management for his attack.
Post-WrestleMania, he wrestled in only one match, which was against McAfee at Backlash.
On the June 9 RAW episode, he challenged Jey Uso for the Heavyweight Championship, which The Ring General won, thus resuming his second title reign.
Seth Rollins Might Star In Gunther’s Babyface Turn
Between Gunther losing and reclaiming his title, Seth Rollins has been on a journey of his own.
Not only has ‘The Visionary’ built his own faction, but he captured the Money in the Bank briefcase, too, becoming a threat to both WWE Champions.
On his podcast Notsam Wrestling, Sam Roberts discussed the possibility of the Austrian turning babyface and Rollins playing a role in it.
We were looking at who the champions are right now. Gunther is the World Heavyweight Champion, and you don’t always need traditional babyface vs. heel.
I also think that Gunther’s gonna be a babyface…and Seth Rollins could turn Gunther babyface. The idea of Seth Rollins cashing in, getting the title off Gunther, and now Gunther is chasing Seth Rollins. I think that that’s entirely possible. [30:42 onwards]
Gunther’s 870-day title reign as the NXT United Kingdom Champion is the eighth-longest championship reign for any WWE title.
