The NJPW Legend Who Says They Had Heat With Vince McMahon Over WWE Contract Dispute
Former WCW star and NJPW icon Scott Norton has shed light on a contract disagreement with WWE that created tension with Vince McMahon.
Speaking on Wrestling Shoot Interviews, Norton discussed the events that led to the dispute, highlighting his decision to prioritise his career in Japan over an uncertain deal with WWE. Norton, a prominent figure in New Japan, explained that the promotion encouraged its talent to gain experience elsewhere at the beginning of their tenure with the company. This guidance prompted him to explore opportunities in WWE, including a tryout match.
New Japan, after you start with them, they want you to go someplace else for a year or two, so I went and visited Vince, and had the big talk with him. They flew me and my wife to Fort Lauderdale, I spent the weekend there and I wrestled Bob [Hardcore Holly] and we had a pretty good little match.
Despite the promising tryout, negotiations hit a roadblock when WWE’s contract offer failed to meet Norton’s expectations. The terms lacked financial guarantees, making it difficult for him to justify leaving his lucrative and stable position in New Japan.
They wouldn’t guarantee a dime, and there’s no way I could just say I’m gonna leave New Japan. It would’ve just been the worst move.
Norton’s refusal to sign the contract reportedly offended Vince McMahon, straining their relationship.
The thing about it is, Vince was offended and I kinda got heat with Vince over it.
Ultimately, Norton chose to join WCW in 1995, where he stayed until 1999 before returning to his NJPW roots.
Why Did Vince McMahon Dislike Christian Cage?
WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross recalled that Vince McMahon wasn’t a huge fan of Christian Cage and said that the reason he wasn’t a fan of Christian was that he wasn’t impressed with the fact that he wasn’t a big man with a bulking physique and as a result, he was reluctant to push him as a result.
