The Godfather Speaks About The Origins Of One Of His Iconic WWE Characters

WWE Hall of Famer The Godfather shared a fascinating behind-the-scenes story about the creation of his infamous character, Papa Shango, revealing that it was inspired by a James Bond movie.

During an episode of the podcast “Poddin’ Ain’t Easy,” The Godfather opened up about how he developed the eerie persona that became one of wrestling’s most memorable characters.

Godfather, whose real name is Charles Wright, explained that the idea for Papa Shango emerged from a conversation with WWE Chairman Vince McMahon. McMahon saw potential in Wright’s intimidating physique but believed that his naturally friendly face didn’t quite fit the villainous roles. To solve this, McMahon suggested a radical transformation.

Vince says, ‘I want to see you work as a heel, you have the body of a monster, but you have a babyface. I have to find out something to do with that face of yours,’

Wright recalled.

I want you to rent the movie “Live and Let Die.” There’s a voodoo character in there, we’re gonna take off from this character, and most importantly, I want you to learn that laugh.’

Despite his roots as a biker from Las Vegas, Wright fully committed to the role of the voodoo priest. WWE even arranged for him to travel to New Orleans to delve deeper into the world of voodoo.

They sent me to New Orleans for awhile, and I met with a bunch of voodoo people. All the symbols I was wearing were real. Everything I was saying was real.
