The Business Reason Behind Ricochet’s AEW Title Win

Ricochet AEW

Tony Khan has explained why Ricochet was the right choice to be AEW’s first National Champion.

There was a Casino Gauntlet match at the AEW Full Gear PPV with the National Title up for grabs. Even though AEW already has the World Title, TNT Title, Unified Title, plus the International & Continental Titles, the company felt the need to create yet another title.

While men like Bobby Lashley and Shelton Benjamin may have been considered the favorites to win that match, it was the heelish Ricochet, who found a way to win the AEW National Title – his first title as an AEW wrestler.

Since Ricochet is a heel that leads The Demand group, which also has Toa Liona & Bishop Kaun, it could be a lengthy title reign for the high flier, thanks to the help from his friends.

Speaking on the Battleground Podcast, AEW Owner and head of creative, Tony Khan, said that Ricochet will be a champion who travels to other promotions.

“We’ve got a new National Champion, Ricochet, who will be defending that title all over the world.

And he’s somebody that not only AEW fans respect—I believe he’s a great, great wrestler—but also someone who is a huge name in wrestling and a great person to represent AEW, not just here on our TV shows, but also when traveling to other promotions in America.”

Ricochet Could Appear In NJPW And CMLL As AEW’s National Champion

AEW has working relationships with other prominent wrestling promotions like New Japan and CMLL in Mexico, so Tony Khan continued to make the point that Ricochet could appear in other promotions where he can have matches as the AEW National Champion.

“Companies like Ring of Honor, New Japan Strong, and even in Mexico with CMLL—lots of other promotions want to bring in Ricochet. He’s a hot booking right now as the National Champion.”

“Ricochet’s gone and represented AEW in New Japan. He’s represented AEW in CMLL. And he’s also a great TV star on our shows.”

“He’s somebody that I would love to have in any kind of championship match in AEW at any time. So, I think he’s a great winner for that first National Championship.” (h/T Ringsidenews)

Tony Khan mentioned Ring of Honor above. That’s a company he owns, and it was confirmed on Dynamite this week that Ricochet will appear on ROH this week as well.
