Story Wasn’t There For WrestleMania Main Event Says WWE Hall Of Famer
A WWE Hall of Famer wanted more from John Cena vs. Cody Rhodes.
When all was said and done, John Cena ended WrestleMania 41 as Undisputed WWE Champion. His victory over Cody Rhodes finally took him past Ric Flair on the all-time list, but his crowning moment immediately divided fans.
While Cena and Rhodes were evenly matched for much of the contest, the arrival of Hip Hop star Travis Scott caused chaos. Although Scott didn’t manage to land the killer blow himself, his presence caused enough of a distraction, enabling Cena to claim the win after Rhodes refused to hit him with the championship belt.
As he nears retirement, Cena will now hope to walk away as World Champion, but what comes next is anyone’s guess.
WWE WrestleMania Moment Missed The Mark
On the latest episode of his 83 Weeks podcast, Eric Bischoff looked back at the main event and explained why he felt it fell short. The WWE Hall of Famer said that the story going into the match lacked heat, and that played into a match that didn’t have the necessary chemistry.
“I have to believe when both those guys watch this match back, they’re going to go, ‘We missed it. We missed the mark because that match just didn’t create emotion…the responsibility is equal among the parties.
The chemistry wasn’t there. I don’t think the story was there to begin with. The heel turn was soft. I didn’t say it’s bad, but it was soft. It wasn’t compelling. There was nothing that felt different than a million other turns we’ve seen before.
Yes, for all of you people who say I never criticize WWE, please pay attention.
That story missed the mark from the get-go, and we talked about it here. And it just hasn’t gotten any better. I believe it had a lack of heat, just lack of a good story,”
During the post-show press conference, John Cena told fans to tune into Monday Night Raw to see how he “ruins wrestling.” He closed by dubbing himself the “Last Real Champion.” For his part, Cody Rhodes left the arena and headed for his tour bus without saying a word.
