Steve Austin Has Questions About John Cena’s Heel Turn
Steve Austin has given his thoughts on John Cena’s stunning heel turn.
On March 1, John Cena turned heel at Elimination Chamber to join The Rock while turning his back on Cody Rhodes. Given that Cena is in the midst of his retirement tour, and he’s spent the vast majority of his career as a babyface, the switch seemed impossible, but rarely is the world of pro wrestling predictable.
Another man who is no stranger to a shock heel turn after years as a beloved babyface is Steve Austin. After dominating the entire industry in the late 1990s, Austin felt his character was in danger of becoming stale, and he needed a fresh spark. This saw Texas Rattlesnake join forces with Vince McMahon at WrestleMania X-Seven to win the World Championship.
However, as the months passed, the switch proved to be a mistake creatively, and the entire company took a hit as a result. In the years since, most involved have admitted that while a change to Austin’s character wasn’t a bad idea in itself, fans just didn’t want to hate him.
Before the dust had even settled on Elimination Chamber, fans were comparing Cena’s turn to Austin’s in 2001, and the veteran is intrigued to see what comes next.
During an interview with The Schmo, Austin said he’s interested to see how the crowd reacts to Cena in the coming weeks.
“It had to happen sooner or later, and finally it happened. So it’ll be interesting to see, you know, whether people accept him as a heel or has he turned himself more babyface. I think it remains to be seen as the story unfolds.
But nonetheless, they’ve [WWE] kicked off an epic build into WrestleMania, and that’s what they do every single year. And this year, it’s here in Las Vegas, so it’s going to be pretty damn awesome.”
Steve Austin Leaves WWE Door Open
During the same interview, Steve Austin admitted “anything could happen” when it comes to a potential appearance at WrestleMania 41. However, he confirmed that he hasn’t been contacted by anyone in WWE and isn’t focusing on the event.
Austin had previously teased an appearance at the spectacular after revealing talks about a spot at WrestleMania 40 ultimately came to nothing.
The WWE Hall of Famer is currently recovering after undergoing knee replacement surgery.
