Significant Update On John Cena’s WWE Retirement Match
John Cena’s WWE retirement is almost here, with more news on the company’s plans for Saturday Night’s Main Event.
Wrestling fans have circled December 13th for months because that’s when WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event airs in Washington, D.C., for John Cena’s final WWE match.
At SNME on December 13th, John Cena will face former 2-time World Champion Gunther, who won the 16-man Last Time Is Now tournament. It will be Cena’s first and last match with Gunther. It will air on Peacock in the US and on WWE’s YouTube channel internationally.
There are four total matches at Saturday Night’s Main Event, and while there are other big matches on the show, many fans assumed Cena’s final match would likely go on last.
However, Bryan Alvarez of the Wrestling Observer reported that WWE actually planned to put the Cena-Gunther match on first.
“At this point, there is no set runtime for Saturday Night’s Main Event, so everyone will get all the time they need. Cena vs. Gunther is currently scheduled to open the show and Cena will get as much time as he wants.”
That report by Alvarez was disputed by Andrew Baydala, who works in sports and entertainment ticket & marketing and has broken WWE stories in the past. He claims Cena’s match with Gunther will be the main event.
“I’ve seen the ‘reports’ and I understand they are given what they are given but… I can tell you that as of today, and things change rapidly. John Cena’s last match will NOT open #SNME.”
Many People In WWE Want John Cena’s Match To Go On Last At Saturday Night’s Main Event
It was reported by Wrestlevotes Radio on Fightful Select that “the majority of people within WWE want John Cena to close the show.” It was added that both ideas (opening or closing the show) have been floated by the company.
There are numerous people in power within WWE who want Cena’s match to go on last. However, there are no firm details about the match’s placement. It was also said that Cena’s match opening SNME is “on the table.” In other words, nothing is locked in yet.
The four-match card at Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 13th looks like this:
- John Cena vs. Gunther in Cena’s final WWE match
- Sol Ruca vs. Bayley
- WWE World Tag Team Champions AJ Styles & Dragon Lee vs. Je’Von Evans & Leon Slater in a non-title match
- WWE Champion Cody Rhodes vs. NXT Champion Oba Femi in a non-title match
