Shocking Truth Behind John Cena’s Crown Jewel Match

WWE John Cena

The truth behind John Cena’s upcoming match with AJ Styles at Crown Jewel has now been revealed.

John Cena is on the final run of his last year as a WWE Superstar, with his retirement set for Saturday Night’s Main Event in December. Cena was recently decimated by Brock Lesnar at Wrestlepalooza, but is looking to bounce back at Crown Jewel against another name from his past.

John Cena took to social media to express how much he wanted to face AJ Styles one more time, but noted that he didn’t make his matches, but hoped WWE would listen to fans who also want to see that match. Cena has been paying tribute to some of his former rivals in recent matches, with the belief being that he won’t be facing them again.

However, it seems WWE always had a plan for Cena vs. Styles.

John Cena Playing Pretend On Social Media

Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer explained that the match with Styles was always the plan for Crown Jewel and that Cena was simply pretending on social media:

They did a little social media gimmick. Essentially, Cena pretended he wants this match and AJ said he wants this match, and they got fans to say they wanted the match. Paul Levesque said, ‘I hear you fans and I’m going to give you this match.’ So they used social media to do an angle.

By the way, this match was always scheduled for Australia. Always. So the whole deal with Cena and AJ, the idea was Cena was doing a tribute to him because he wasn’t gonna get to wrestle him. That was actually to build to this match, that was not actually ever the case.

The idea was they would tell people, you’re not gonna get this match, which meant people were – nobody was gonna clamour for the match – so to create a demand for the match, they basically told the story that Cena’s paying tribute to him because he’s only got limited dates, and AJ ain’t getting it.

Meltzer intimated that Styles’ recent promo rallying against WWE management was also part of the build to the match with Cena at Crown Jewel.
