Sheamus Thinks His Match Should Have Main Evented WrestleMania 39
Sheamus feels strongly that the match he was involved in at WrestleMania 39 should have been in a main event position.
Since WrestleMania has become a two-night event going back to WrestleMania 36 in 2020, there have been two matches that get to be in the coveted main event position. One match gets to main event Saturday and another match gets to main event Sunday.
At WrestleMania 39 in Los Angeles, Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn beating The Usos for the WWE Tag Team Titles was the Saturday main event. They would go on to have an excellent match that was considered a match of the year by many people. It was also the first time the WWE Tag Team Titles main evented a WrestleMania, so that made it a historic first as well.
Ric Flair is a two-time WWE Hall of Famer who has complained about the main event of WrestleMania 39 numerous times because he thought his daughter Charlotte Flair’s match with Rhea Ripley should have gone on last.
Add Sheamus to the list of people who think a different match should have gone on last. At WrestleMania 39, Sheamus was part of an incredible triple threat match where he and best friend Drew McIntyre challenged GUNTHER in an Intercontinental Title match that ended up as a classic match between the three hard-hitting Europeans. GUNTHER remained the champion, but it was an incredible effort by McIntyre and Sheamus.
For many WWE fans, the triple threat match between GUNTHER, Sheamus & Drew McIntyre was the match of the year.
Sheamus Feels Nothing Else Was Close To His Match At WrestleMania 39
The GUNTHER-McIntyre-Sheamus match took place on WrestleMania 39 Sunday as the third match on that card. In the opinion of the former WWE Champion Sheamus, that match should have been in a main event position.
While talking to Virgin Media Sports Stories, the Celtic Warrior was asked about his goals in WWE.
“The IC Title. That’s it. I want to main event WrestleMania too. I want to main event WrestleMania, that’s another one. The IC Title and main event WrestleMania are the two things I want to do.”
“I should have main evented WrestleMania (39). It should have gone on last. It stole the show at WrestleMania. Nothing came close, match-wise, the match me, Gunther, and Drew had. I knew that was always going to be the case. I was so close (to winning the IC Title) at Mania, and it just got taken away from me.”
It was the second year in a row that Sheamus and Gunther were involved in an all-time classic match. At the Clash at the Castle 2022 event in Wales, they had another legendary battle as well.
