Sheamus Names Famous Match That Almost Never Happened

Sheamus WWE Raw

Sheamus pitched the idea for a beloved match.

For much of 2022 and into 2023 Sheamus was a man on a mission. The proud Irishman has won pretty much all there is to win with WWE, but he’s never held the Intercontinental Title.

This determination led to a series of hard-hitting matches with the then-champion Gunther, Drew McIntyre, and more. This included an acclaimed Triple Threat Match between the trio at WrestleMania 39. However, arguably the biggest match during this period saw Sheamus challenge Gunther one-on-one at Clash at the Castle 2022.

For almost 20 minutes the two men viciously went to war, with Gunther eventually retaining the gold.

During an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, Sheamus said the match was “very special” before revealing that it wouldn’t have happened without a conversation with Triple H.

“The Gunther match to me is very special. That match wasn’t even supposed to happen. (WWE) was going to Wales, and at the time I wasn’t doing anything. I talked to Hunter about it, we spitballed back and forth, and then he went and made the match. I pitched that match in Wales. Fair play to him, he made it happen,”

Bret Hart Was Embarrassed By Sheamus Vs. Gunther

While the match was acclaimed by fans and critics alike, Bret Hart later said he was “embarrassed” to be sitting ringside for the bout.

The Hitman was highly critical of that match and the show in general, claiming the modern generation of wrestlers don’t know how to tell stories in the ring.
