Shawn Michaels Reveals The WWE Star He Wants For One Last Match

Shawn Michaels WWE

Shawn Michaels fought his last WWE match on March 28, 2010, at WrestleMania XXVI, where he faced The Undertaker in a career vs. streak match.

The Heartbreak Kid lost the match due to the stipulation, which forced him to retire from in-ring competition. The night after WrestleMania XXVI, Michaels gave a heartfelt farewell on Raw, concluding his active wrestling career.

Since retiring, Shawn Michaels has remained heavily involved in WWE behind the scenes. Starting in 2016, he joined the WWE Performance Center as a coach, mentoring and training new talent.

Over time, he took on more prominent backstage responsibilities, becoming WWE’s Senior Vice President of Talent Development and Creative, overseeing the NXT brand. Although he wrestled a one-off match at Crown Jewel in 2018, his focus is now primarily on talent development.

Shawn Michaels Would Like To Face AJ Styles For One Last Time at WrestleMania

Speaking with Gorrilla Position, Shawn Michaels was asked if he were to wrestle one last WrestleMania match, who would it be against? HBK picked AJ Styles.

“I think the one we really want to see is me and AJ. That’s [who] I go with. [As] more talent comes along, you start looking at them. I go, ‘Oh, boy! I could do cool stuff with him, I could do cool stuff with him.’ But I think AJ and I [have] similar styles and stuff like that, so I always feel like that would be one people would want to see.”

The Phenomenal One is himself on the verge of retirement. During an interview with Chris Van Vliet on his Insight podcast, the 48-year-old veteran announced he wouldn’t wrestle past 50, which means he only has a couple of years left inside the ring.

Styles’ WWE contract is set to end in February 2026, after which he could either choose to stay in the promotion or tread a different path. After witnessing his explosive Raw promo, some fans suspect he’ll quit WWE because of booking frustrations. However, many critics and veterans claim the promo was just a work.
