Shawn Michaels Has No Regrets About Ill-Fated In-Ring WWE Comeback
Shawn Michaels is still proud of his final match.
For several years, it appeared as though Shawn Michaels might be one of the very few professional wrestlers to retire and actually stick to it.
At WrestleMania 26, Michaels was beaten by long-term rival The Undertaker, and as per the stipulation, he officially retired. Although he continued to make several on-screen appearances and remained in and around the company, he resisted the temptation to wrestle again.
However, that all changed at Crown Jewel in 2018 when he teamed with Triple H one last time to face The Undertaker and Kane.
Despite the match being Michaels’ first in eight years, he arguably turned in the best performance as the bout quickly fell apart. The action was littered with botches and miscommunications from the get-go. Triple H tore his pec early on, and then, to cap things off, Kane’s mask and wig fell off.
Shawn Michaels Has No Regrets
During an appearance on The Undertaker’s Six Feet Under podcast, Michaels and The Deadman reflected on their Saudi disaster. While he admitted that the match didn’t go to plan, Michaels said it provided a fitting ending.
“It so doesn’t bother me. I don’t care… if that’s going to be the one out of the whatever the 599 that went fantastic. You put one blemish on it and that’s gonna I could care… You couldn’t. No one could badger me enough to make me feel bad about that. I’m sorry… I almost take that as a sense of pride, because I don’t know. I go like you have to, I don’t know.
Think about the life I’ve lived. I don’t sort of like winning my last match. You can’t be the Heartbreak Kid and win your last match… I can’t be a member of DX and not have that last match just be completely freaking bonkers. I don’t know.
It’s like, said, I don’t know, for whatever, I think I’ll say this. It’s because, through the help of you and countless other guys, I’m so proud of the rest of it. There’s just, there’s just, there’s not enough. There’s not enough shame in this world to make me feel like, you know, I mean, I don’t know.”
By contrast, The Undertaker described the match as a “train wreck,” although he did concede that he’s able to laugh about it now.
Following the match, Michaels sipped back into retirement, before eventually taking control of NXT in 2021.
