Update on Shane McMahon’s WWE Status Following Vince McMahon’s Departure

Shane McMahon cuts a promo

A new report has shed some light on the WWE status of Shane McMahon following his father’s retirement.

Fightful Select has given an update on where Shane McMahon currently stands with WWE. Once a staple of WWE TV, the Prodigal Son was last seen at the Royal Rumble, where he reportedly caused chaos backstage that led to his release.

The report notes that it was Vince McMahon himself who made the decision to cut his son from WWE. The now-former Chairman reportedly said that Shane “would never get another pop in this company as long as I’m around”, although this was likely to just have been said in the heat of the moment.

Following the Royal Rumble, it was reported that Shane McMahon had acted unprofessionally. While acting as a producer for the match, Shane also appeared in the ring himself as the 28th entrant. He allegedly booked the final stages of the 30-man bout to revolve around him, outstriking former UFC fighter Riddle and throwing Kevin Owens from the ring.

At the time, Dave Meltzer said in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that Vince McMahon had “no options but to fire him”, showing just how serious the problems Shane caused during the match were. Brock Lesnar, the match’s eventual winner, sent Shane O’Mac over the top rope as the penultimate elimination.

Before his departure, Shane McMahon had been part of plans for Elimination Chamber, and was due to have a program with Seth Rollins leading into WrestleMania 38.
