Shane McMahon Not Wanted By WWE

Shane McMahon and Tony Khan broke the internet as a photo of their secret meeting did the rounds online, but was that all part of the plan?

WrestleTalk and Fightful Select reported that Shane McMahon held a private meeting with Tony Khan on July 29th at a private Arlington airport. It was reported that Khan and McMahon’s meeting was to discuss “possibilities moving forward.” It was also confirmed that Shane McMahon is no longer under any kind of WWE contract meaning that he could appear on AEW television at any time if he so chose to.

A photo of the pair’s apparently secret meeting was also published and despite neither man looking ready to have their photo snapped, it seems it might have been part of a bigger plan.

Tony Khan & Shane McMahon Photo Part Of A Plan?

Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer explained why he thinks a photo of McMahon and Khan’s meeting being made public was no accident and thinks Khan might have been looking to boost AEW Dynamite’s rating with some intrigue:

This is my gut on this. This is two guys and they both wanted it out there [that they met], why would they want it out there? Well, in the case of Tony Khan, I think he wanted something to intrigue people. Look, every wrestling show has got destroyed by the Olympics in the ratings which we knew was going to happen.

Dynamite should be no different so he was looking for something to get people talking and hey maybe Shane McMahon’s gonna be on Dynamite tonight. Hopefully, that would make a difference and they would do better in the ratings than they would have done otherwise. That was I’m sure his idea among other things.

As far as Shane McMahon’s reasons for perhaps wanting the meeting to be known about, that is less clear to Meltzer but he does confirm that despite McMahon making noises about returning to WWE, the new regime in charge doesn’t want him:

With Shane, you just don’t know, I know Shane McMahon has looked to get back in WWE, I know the people in charge of WWE have no interest in him. Could that change with the idea that he would be willing to go to AEW? Maybe, maybe not. Would he be really willing to go to AEW? I don’t know where his mind is. Should AEW take him which is probably the big question and that depends on what role you’re talking about.

Shane McMahon has broken his silence on the meeting and has done nothing to suggest that he’s not open to what could be the biggest surprise yet for Tony Khan and AEW.
