Update On WWE Plans For Seth Rollins At SummerSlam
Seth Rollins will be featured prominently at WWE SummerSlam and he’ll likely be facing a very familiar opponent.
Ever since he won WWE’s new World Heavyweight Championship at Night of Champions in May, Seth “Freakin” Rollins has been a fighting champion that is willing to take on all comers.
One man that Seth Rollins has already beaten to keep the World Title is The Judgment Day’s Finn Balor. They wrestled at Money in the Bank two weeks ago with Rollins winning that match to keep his title. Balor was slightly distracted by his buddy Damian Priest of The Judgment Day, which allowed Rollins to capitalize for the win.
Since then, Balor has been picking up victories in a big six-man tag team match this past Monday on Raw and another win in a regular tag team match in NXT on Tuesday night. Balor also beat NXT Champion Carmelo Hayes clean on the Raw prior to Money in the Bank as well.
All of this is being done because WWE’s plan is for Finn Balor to challenge Seth Rollins for the World Heavyweight Title again at SummerSlam.
On Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer spoke about how Balor is not likely going to be added to the NXT Title match between Carmelo Hayes and challenger Ilja Dragunov at Great American Bash on July 30th. That’s because Balor-Rollins is likely at SummerSlam on August 5th.
“The problem is, Finn, is wrestling Seth. That’s for SummerSlam. So I doubt they would put Finn in a match and have him not win it right before putting him into two championship matches so close together. They’re only a week apart. They announced Carmelo Hayes vs. Ilja Dragunov because Finn’s being protected right now. Finn’s beating everyone because they’ve got to get Finn back ready for Seth.”
As he continued, Meltzer made it clear that the plan is to do Seth Rollins-Finn Balor again at SummerSlam.
“I do know that the plan was that Finn’s going over (winning) constantly because they’ve got to rehab him for Seth because that’s at SummerSlam.”
In last week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer listed eight matches that were likely to happen at SummerSlam or perhaps in the days around the show because they might not be able to get every match on the SummerSlam card.
- Undisputed WWE Universal Championship: Roman Reigns vs. Jey Uso
- Cody Rhodes vs. Brock Lesnar
- Intercontinental Championship: Gunther vs. Drew McIntyre
- Logan Paul vs. Ricochet
- World Women’s Championship: Rhea Ripley vs. Raquel Gonzalez
- WWE Women’s Championship: Asuka vs. Charlotte Flair vs. Bianca Belair
- Ronda Rousey vs. Shayna Baszler
- Trish Stratus vs. Becky Lynch
It looks like we can add Seth Rollins vs. Finn Balor to that. There will likely be a match for WWE Tag Team Champions Sami Zayn & Kevin Owens as well as some others that are featured on television regularly.
