Seth Rollins has openly revealed how he had to navigate backstage politics in WWE to get his opportunities at the top.

Seth Rollins is a well-known WWE name around the world. He is one of the most recognised wrestlers from the modern era of sports entertainment.

With his great storytelling abilities and in-ring work combined with a staunch professionalism, The Architect has been one of the top main event stars for the Stamford-based promotion for over ten years.

The 39-year-old Grand Slam Champion is someone who climbed the ranks from WWE’s developmental territories where wrestlers would be able to reach the top by merit. Unfortunately for Rollins, reality struck after being promoted to the main roster in WWE where he quickly realised that the backstage ballgame was largely politics-driven rather than merit.

Seth Rollins Sheds Light on WWE’s Backstage Politics

Speaking openly about the backstage scenario in WWE with Jay Mohr on his podcast, The Visionary said that the meritocracy present in his developmental years was gone when he went to the big leagues in WWE’s main roster.

Roll pointed to the fact that he had to make a lot of people happy to keep getting top opportunities in the company.

It was actually a good exercise in patience for me. I had to wait for two years before I was up on the main roster. So for me, what I had to learn was how to play the political game.

That was the part that I had never..on the independent scene it was very much a meritocracy to a point, you know, there’s a little bit of the politics that you have to play, but if you go out and the crowd responds, you’re going to get more bookings. You’re going to get a better position on the card. You’re going to make more money, all that good stuff.

Rollins goes on to indicate that he had to work harder in WWE to keep getting top-flight opportunities by playing the politics game with the people backstage.

But WWE, it’s a different animal and you have to work backstage the same way you had to work out in the ring. So it didn’t matter that I was having the best matches on the show or that there was a little bit of a following behind me.

That only mattered to a point. I still had to like, I still had to work to get these people to give me the opportunity on the bigger stage.

Seth Rollins is currently out of action with a shoulder injury. He revealed that he could return to the ring before WrestleMania 42.
