Why Seth Rollins Had To Fake An Injury Explained

Seth Rollins WWE

Gunther put his World Heavyweight Championship on the line against CM Punk at SummerSlam Night One main event.

The atmosphere in the MetLife Stadium was already intense, but it turned even more chaotic when Seth Rollins cashed in his Money in the Bank briefcase on the Second City Saint. But what made it truly controversial was that The Visionary faked an injury before making his move.

Many wrestling veterans and experts questioned this approach, saying Rollins didn’t need to pretend to be hurt because having the briefcase already gave him a big advantage. So then, why did Mr. Money in the Bank choose to use a fake injury as part of his cash-in?

Seth Rollins Faked an Injury To Fool CM Punk and the Fans

On the latest episode of his Notsam Wrestling podcast, wrestling analyst Sam Roberts addressed this question. According to Roberts, Seth Rollins faked his injury mainly because he wanted to cash in against CM Punk personally. As soon as CM Punk became the number one contender and everyone knew he would get a title shot, it was obvious that Rollins would try anything to screw his arch-nemesis.

WWE allegedly wanted to add a mystery factor and more drama to the storyline. By having Rollins act injured, they tricked fans into thinking there was no way Seth Rollins would pull off any shenanigans against CM Punk’s championship match that night. But in a classic WWE twist, Seth Rollins shocked everyone and walked out as the new champion.

The nature of the Money in the Bank briefcase means that you don’t have to fake an injury. And if you’re cashing in on anybody else, faking an injury has nothing to do with it because anybody else wouldn’t be expecting him.

I think the fact that Rollins cashed in on CM Punk, his ultimate rival, is why you would fake the injury, because otherwise CM Punk would be waiting for the cash-in, because it would be obvious that Seth was going to do this. So, I think that would be why the logic behind why that character would have to fake an injury, even though they already had that money in the bank briefcase. [14:17 – 14:57]
